Rumor: Frenkie de Jong deal close

Several sources on Sunday claim that Manchester United and FC Barcelona are close to reaching a deal for Frenkie de Jong. Other reports claim that the two clubs have already reached a verbal understanding. The player would still need to consent to the change, but if reports on the matter are to be believed, he has been persuaded to rejoin his former employer at Old Trafford.

De Jong has essentially been Erik ten Hag's top priority recruit this summer since he was announced as the new manager of Manchester United. His former player struggled both individually and collectively throughout the course of the last three seasons at Barcelona. Although he definitely has professional aspirations to play for Barcelona, the team appears to believe that selling him would be a better way to raise money for Xavi's reconstruction plan.

Over the past few months, Frenkie de Jong has battled to hold down a spot in the team as Xavi has favored La Masia talent for his favoured position and used him more in a Busquets role. It is assumed that as a ball-progressor and tempo-setter in midfield, he would play more naturally at Manchester United. Although there are still many unanswered questions regarding the holding midfield position, de Jong's addition would undoubtedly have a positive impact on the team as a whole and serve as the perfect springboard for ten Hag's first season in command.

Players would undoubtedly want to expedite transfer chases as they return to Carrington this week to start training under the new manager. If de Jong could come by the end of the week, they would be in a terrific position as they start getting ready for the quickly approaching new season.
