Veterans Day

Veterans Day, which is celebrated on November 11 every year, honors those who have served in the military for the United States. Forces of Arms. Veterans Day recognizes all military veterans, including those who are still alive, in contrast to Memorial Day, which remembers those who passed away while serving.

VETERANS DAY 2023 IS WHEN?

Veterans Day is honored on November 11 each year. On the anniversary of the end of World War I, a holiday is observed to recognize the men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

VETERANS DAY'S HISTORY

President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Veterans Day on November 11, 1919, a year after the end of World War I, with the intention of paying tribute to the valor and sacrifice of the dead troops of the Great War. Congress passed a resolution demanding that President Calvin Coolidge issue yearly proclamations on November 11 designating Armistice Day as a legal holiday seven years later, in 1926.

The concept to extend Armistice Day to honor all soldiers as opposed to simply those who lost their lives in World War I came to World War II veteran Raymond Weeks in 1945. Weeks led a delegation to General Dwight Eisenhower, who was enthusiastic about the idea. The following year, in 1945, and every year after that, up until his passing in 1985, Weeks hosted the first Veterans Day event in Alabama. He received the Presidential Citizenship Medal from President Reagan in 1982. Weeks was also referred to by Elizabeth Dole as the "Father of Veterans Day."

According to Ed Rees, the U.S. A representative from Emporia, Kansas, delivered a measure to Congress that would have created the holiday. On May 26, 1954, eight and a half years after Raymond Weeks celebrated the inaugural Veterans Day, Eisenhower, the president at the time and a native of Kansas, signed the legislation into law. The 83rd United States Infantry Division served in both World Wars II and the Korean War. In order to honor American soldiers of all wars, Congress changed the Act of 1938 on the urging of veterans' service organizations, replacing the phrase "Armistice" with the word "Veterans." This legislation was approved on June 1, 1954.

Additionally established in 1954, the National Veterans Award was given to Congressman Rees as recognition for his assistance in establishing Veterans Day as a federal holiday. Although the holiday is currently observed on November 11 and was first observed on that day, the day was changed in 1971 as a result of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Finally, on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a bill that moved Veterans Day's yearly celebration back to November 11 as of 1978.

The federal government observes the holiday on a Friday if it falls on a Saturday or a Monday if it falls on a Sunday. The US sets federal government shutdown dates. Non-government organizations are free to close or remain open as they see fit, independent of decisions made locally about state, local, or federal government operations.

National Veterans Awareness Week was established by United States Senate Resolution 143, which was adopted on August 4, 2001. It ran from November 11 to November 17, 2001. The resolution demanded that initiatives be taken to educate elementary and high school children about the contributions and sacrifices made by veterans.

WHY VETERANS DAY MATTERS

It's a time to express gratitude to those who risk their lives to protect America.

According to government figures, post-traumatic stress disorder or serious depression affects 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. You wouldn't believe how much it means to veterans to feel appreciated by non-service members for their efforts and sacrifices.

It's an opportunity to consider the value of peace.

Although the majority of soldiers will tell you that they risked their lives to protect our basic liberties and that they cherish peace much more than war, our military is frequently conceived of in a war context. Veterans Day urges all of us to pause and consider the importance of harmony in our daily interactions and lives. Few people who have experienced the true tragedy of war are eager to rush into it.

It highlights the difficulties that many veterans face.

Veterans frequently contend with horrific wounds and experience disproportionately high rates of homelessness, poor educational performance, work difficulties, and unemployment. Post-traumatic stress disorder frequently makes it difficult for individuals to reintegrate into mainstream life. Understanding these difficulties can help us all bridge gaps and ensure that veterans have the best chance at leading happy, healthy lives after their service.
